Abstract
Disaster risk reduction is a way of diminishing the damage caused by natural hazards like floods, droughts earthquakes and cyclones. Disaster risk reduction efforts, such as the Hyogo Framework for Action, adopted by nations in 2005 and implemented by some countries to strengthening their policies and institutions, have made progress in reducing losses. However, some factors such as exposure, urbanization, extreme weather events, low level of awareness and social vulnerabilities were identified as present and future challenges for disaster risk reduction. Since natural hazards and disasters cannot be prevented, it is imperative to look for ways of overcoming the challenges. Possible ways of addressing the challenges were suggested so that disaster risk could be reduced to the minimum.
